This training course is for those with well-established industry experience to train to become Script Supervisors. It is aimed at those who have identified that being a Script Supervisor is their ideal career.

If you are someone who wants to be close to the action on set, likes to work independently, relishes responsibility and have:

Applications

This training is supported by ScreenSkills using National Lottery funds awarded by the British Film Institute (BFI) as part of the Future Film Skills programme.

This course is open to those who have:

  • 3 or more years’ professional experience
  • A minimum of 3 credits+ (not including entry level / runner credits)

Those who are have current and/or previous experience in the following roles are likely to have skills that would transfer well into the  Script Supervisor role:

  • Production Assistant
  • Production Coordinator
  • Gallery PA (e.g. entertainment / sport)
  • Autocue operators
  • Camera assistants
  • Script Editors
  • 3rd Assistant Directors

We also welcome applications from those looking to return to work following a career break who have equivalent experience.

The course is in two parts – a classroom element (5 days) and a placement element (5 days).

The classroom training will run in person over 5 consecutive days. Applicants must be available to attend ALL training days on their chosen course.

  • Course 1: Monday 21st – Friday 25th November, Birmingham
  • Course 2: Monday 5th – Friday 9th December, Leeds

Following the classroom training each ScreenSkills and Mission Accomplished will seek to find a one week (5 day) placement for each participant to shadow the Script Supervisor on a Film or TV drama. Placements will be subsidised by ScreenSkills. Applicants will be asked for their availability following the training and their base(s) to help facilitate the placements. All placements must be completed by 31st January 2023.

Prior to the first classroom day there will be a 90 mins Zoom call where participants will be able to meet each other and the trainers.

Day 1
  • What is a Script Supervisors Role?
  • What is “continuity”?
  • The “prep” process
  • Why & How to “Time” a Script
  • Breaking down a script
  • Role of Script Supervisor at a Read through, Recce and Production Meeting

Homework: Give Script Scenes to breakdown to review in morning

Day 2
  • A shooting day for a Script Supervisor
  • Coverage – Why & How to obtain it
  • Why & How to Match Action
  • Crossing the line and Eyelines
  • Taking photos – what’s important to take
  • Shots Language
  • How to write a continuity sheet
  • The editor’s tramlined script

Homework: Continue to breakdown a few scenes of a script.

Day 3
  • Practical day – The Script Supervisor on set
  • On set etiquette
  • Interacting with Actors and Directors
  • Live actors practical – noting action
  • Writing up notes – continuity / editors tramline script

Homework: looking at scenes to shoot tomorrow- making notes on what to look for in advance

Day 4
  • Practical day – Live Role Play with actors and recording
  • Putting it all together

Homework: any questions they have for Q&A tomorrow

Day 5
  • Review of yesterday’s Role Play
  • Progress reports
  • Script amendments
  • Selected takes charts
  • Filming phone calls
  • Working with green screen / CGI
  • Guest speaker – talk about getting started as a Script Supervisor, their work as an assistant, software they prefer
  • Paper scripts vs iPad working
  • Interacting with other departments.
  • Wrap up of course
Following the classroom element of the training we will work with ScreenSkills to secure each participant a one week (5 day placement) on a scripted production. The placements will be subsidised by ScreenSkills. Placements will take place following the classroom training and will all have been completed by the end of January 2023.

Participants will be asked for their availablity for placements once their place on the course is confirmed.

By the end of training course participants will have:

  • Gained in depth insight into the role and responsibilities of the Script Supervisor
  • Learned how to time and break down a script
  • Learned the importance of coverage, eyelines, crossing the line and how to match the action
  • Had opportunity to test out their skills practically in a safe environment
  • Gained knowledge of paperwork requirements
  • Developed the professional skills needed in the role
  • Met an assistant Script Supervisor

By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge and confidence to begin their career in the Script Supervisor department.

This course would normally cost participants £400, but thanks to funding from the ScreenSkills Future Film Skills fund, it is currently being offered to you free.
